The Aesir’s envoy to Hel

 

After Loki tricked Hoðr into killing his brother Baldr (Oðin’s son), Oðin and Frigg asked for a volunteer to travel to Hel and negotiate for Baldr’s return. Hermóðr agreed to go and Oðin loaned him his horse, Sleipnir. As proof that he had made the journey, Hermóðr returned with Oðin’s arm ring, Draupnir, that had been burned on Baldr’s funeral pyre. He also bore a gift of linen from Baldr’s wife for Frigg and Hel’s conditions for Baldr’s release.
