Ruler of the underworld

The daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, Hel is given dominion over those who do not die in battle. She rules over the underworld called Hel from her great hall, Éljúðnir. Her name means “hidden” and she is described as appearing half alive and half dead. Hel is depicted here gesturing with one hand to welcome the newly deceased to her domain. In her other hand, she holds a dish called “hunger” and on her belt hangs a knife called “famine.”
