Oðin’s eight-legged horse

Sleipnir is widely known as Oðin’s eight-legged horse. His father, Svaðilfari, was a stallion belonging to a jötunn known as “the master builder” who had been hired to build a wall around Asgard. Loki was forced to shape-shift into a mare to seduce and distract Svaðilfari and thereby free the gods from the deal they had made with the jötunn. Failure would have resulted in the loss of the goddess Freyja, the sun and the moon. This story is how we know that Loki is Sleipnir’s mother.
