Guardian of Hel’s bridge
 
To pass from the world of the living to that of the dead, one must cross the river Gjöll by going over the bridge known as Gjallarbrú (bridge of Gjöll). This bridge is guarded by Móðguðr, a mysterious maiden who keeps account of all who pass between the worlds. On one occasion, she allowed Hermóðr to cross her bridge and gave him directions to Hel so he could fulfill his mission to secure the return of the recently deceased god, Baldr.
