The mother of monsters

Angrboða means “bringer of grief” and the name is a fitting one for she is the mother of three monsters who will play a central role in defeating the Æsir gods at Ragnarök - Fenrir the wolf will swallow Oðin; the Midgard Serpent, Jörmungandr, will slay Thor; and Hel will open the gates of the dead. It is also possible that Angrboða is the dead seeress whom Oðin raises from the grave to answer his questions in the Völuspa, which is one of the most important poems in the Poetic Edda.
