Stealer of seafarers

Rán rules over the sea with her jötunn husband, Ægir. Her name is an Old Norse word meaning theft or robbery and she carries a large net to ensnare sailors and drag them down to her hall beneath the waves. She is a goddess of death as well as a personification of the sea itself. So, while some brave warrirors are selected to spend eternity in Valhöll, and others are destined for Hel or elsewhere, those who die at sea are fated to spend their afterlife in the watery realm of  Ægir and Rán.
