Guardian of Hel's gate

Garmr is described in the Prose Edda as a massive dog that guards Hel’s gate. There he is chained until Ragnarok when he is destined to break free to fight the god, Tyr. It is unclear whether Garmr is a separate being or simply another name for Fenrir the wolf. The root word "garm" is often used as a kenning (poetic allusion) for that which destroys (like fire being the garm of wood).
