King of the Einherjar

Eirikr Haraldsson (known as “Eirik Bloodaxe”) was (in life) briefly King of Norway and twice King of Northumbria. Upon his death in 954, Gunnhild (his wife), commissioned the skaldic poem Eiríksmál. It is a conversation between Oðin and Bragi as they prepare Valhöll for Eirikr’s arrival whereupon he is to be inducted into the ranks of the Einherjar, the army of fallen warriors who will fight beside Oðin at the battle of Ragnarok.
