The silent god

Víðar is a son of Oðin and the giantess, Gríðr. He is best known for avenging his father's death when Oðin is swallowed by Fenrir the wolf at the battle of Ragnarök. He does this by breaking Fenrir's jaw with the aid of a giant boot constructed from all the leather discarded by humans since the dawn of time. Known as the "silent god," Víðar has the distinction of being among the gods to survive Ragnarök, living on in the new world that arises from the ashes of the old one.
