What Has Become

Norns are often confused with the Greek Moirai (Fates) but there are several differences. Unlike the Moirai who weave the fates of men with threads, Norns carve the fates of men onto wood. Norns also care for the world tree, Yggdrasil, by watering it from Urðarbrunnr (Urðr’s well). Urðr is the Norn who oversees that which has become (the past). She is shown here carving into the roots of Yggdrasil in young futhark. Her inscription reads “they carved on sticks.”
