What Should Happen

Skuld (pronounced schooled) is a Norn focused on the future. Her name means “that which ought to happen” and gives us the English word “should.” She is depicted here carving in young futhark onto a tree branch a line that reads “the fates of men” (Old Norse ørlög seggja). Skuld shares her name with a valkyrie and it has been suggested that she and the valkyrie may be one and the same. To illustrate this possible connection, Skuld carries a sword at her side.
