Although often seen only in his final form (a dragon), Fáfnir is actually a dvergr (dwarf) and one of three sons of King Hreiðmar. When one brother (Otr) was killed by the Æsir, Fáfnir demanded a share of the compensation made to their father. When Hreiðmar refused, Fáfnir slew him. When the third brother (Regin) asked for a share of their father’s treasure, Fáfnir refused, hoarding it all and transforming into a dragon to protect it. Fáfnir is ultimately slain by Regin’s foster son, a young warrior named Sigurð.
