The fourth piece in the Viking Artifact Series, this relief of a Viking-Age Dane Axe is sculpted to look like an artifact recently unearthed by an archeologist, battleworn, time-scarred, and heavily weathered.
While extensively researched, this piece is not intended to be a replica of any particular artifact. Rather, it is an artistic interpretation that is a melding of archeological finds, historical research, and descriptions found in the Old Norse Eddas and Sagas.
Skjaldarbani (meaning "Shield's Bane" in Old Norse) features an intricate design done in the Mammen style from the end of the Viking Age when small raiding parties had been replaced by larger, more organized formations. It is offered with or without hand-gilded silver leaf detailing. The silver leaf is also weathered to give it a tarnished/aged appearance true to an artifact.
The axe is then mounted to a hand-stained red oak board with mounting hardware, numbered brass edition plaque, and bumpers to protect your walls. It also comes with a 12-page full color booklet that contains information about the history of the axe(s), the Viking Artifact Series as a whole, and the techniques employed to create the art.
The overall measurements of the mounted bearded axe are 11.25" wide by 11.25" tall, and it weighs just over four pounds.
