Smith & countrymen of elves

The only character in the Poetic Edda to be directly identified as an álfr (elf), Völund is a smith of great renown and his story is one of vengeance. Maimed, imprisoned, and forced to ply his trade for the benefit of his captor, King Nithuth of Sweden, Völund bides his time until the opportunity presents itself to bring the king's entire family to ruin. This he does in a truly gruesome fashion. Vengeance achieved, Völund escapes his prison on wings crafted on his magical forge.
