The dragon under Yggdrasil

A dragon determined to bring about the end of all creation, Níðhöggr gnaws on the roots of the world tree, Yggdrasil. He also feasts upon the corpses of those guilty of murder or oath-breaking (seen as the most heinous of crimes in Norse society). His name means "he who strikes with malice." In the Völuspá (a poem in the Poetic Edda), after the world-ending battle of Ragnarök, Níðhöggr rises on corpse-laden wings; a sign that evil will always exist.
